Building Commission to hold seminar on bushfire standards for building industry

The Building Commission is conducting an update seminar for members of the building and construction industries. The purpose of the seminar is to canvas the upcoming changes and proposed amendments to the Building Regulations 2012 in relation to bushfires and swimming pool barriers.

An overview of construction details in accordance with Australian Standards 3959, the Australian standard for construction of buildings in a bushfire-prone area and an update on roles and services provided by the Building Commission will be provided. The seminars will be of particular use to those working in the building industry including builders, building designers, building surveyors, tradespeople and local government.

The seminars will be held on:

  • Monday 4 April 2016 at 1:30pm to 4:30pm at the Technology Park Function Centre, 2 Brodie-Hall Drive, Bentley; and
  • Wednesday 6 April 2016 at 1:30pm to 4:30pm at the Technology Park Function Centre, 2 Brodie-Hall Drive, Bentley.

The seminars are free to attend, but places are limited and registration is essential. To reserve a place at one of the seminars, please contact the Building Commission.

        BUILDING AND PLANNING IN BUSHFIRE PRONE AREAS – AWARENESS COURSE
        LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE – DON’T MISS OUT

        FPA Australia in conjunction with the Department of Planning are delivering several 2 Day Awareness Courses for Building & Planning in Bushfire Prone Areas.

        The courses are scheduled as follows:
        • Perth 30 – 31 May
        • Perth 1-2 June
        • Bunbury 23 – 24 June
        • Perth 3 – 4 August

        The State Government is offering a discounted enrolment fee for one participant from each Local Government Area. Eligible participants are only required to pay $190, a saving of $600 off the standard enrolment fee. This discounted offer only applies for courses in May and June.

        What does the course cover?

        This course will provide participants with a broad understanding of the new building and planning requirements for development in bushfire prone areas in Western Australia.

        The course covers a wide range of elements including:

        • bushfire behaviour

        • bushfire planning and building legislative requirements in Western Australia

        • understanding of the application of AS3959; and

        • bushfire specific documentation to support building and planning applications.

        The course is suitable for town planners, building surveyors, ecological consultants, local government staff, developers, builders and others involved in building and planning in bushfire prone areas. The course will provide a broad understanding of the bushfire specific requirements for building and planning in Western Australia including the legislative framework, policies, guidelines and the roles and responsibilities of various professionals working in the field.
