Develop a bushfire survival plan

WA BAL Report recommends that, if you live in a bushfire-prone area, you have a bushfire attack level assessment report conducted of your property. However, it is important to go beyond that and prepare a bushfire survival plan, to be implemented when a bushfire threatens your home and family. Remember, the more prepared you are, the higher your chance of survival.

A bushfire survival plan sets out what actions you will take to avoid making last minute decisions that could be deadly in a bushfire. Research has shown that leaving late can be deadly. Over the last 100 years 60% of people who died in bushfires were found within 100 metres of their own residence. Act immediately. Never ‘wait and see’ what might happen as relocating at the last minute can be deadly. Never second guess your plan.

In developing your plan, decide if you will leave to safer place or stay and defend your home. The plan must be prepared and practiced with all members of the family before the bushfire season. You should ask yourself:

  • What will trigger you to leave
  • If you decide to leave to a safer place, where will you go and how will you get there? Avoid a ‘wait and see’ attitude as relocating at the last minute can be deadly
  • Are there elderly people in your family, young children or people with disabilities or an illness? When and how will they be relocated?
  • What will you do with pets and livestock?
  • Is your home capable of and in a good position to be defended?
  • Will your home be sufficient shelter if you decide to stay?
  • Do you have the right skills, equipment and resources to actively defend your property?
  • Would you be physically and mentally capable of dealing with the stress and pressures of a bushfire?

You should also ensure that you have a backup plan in place in case your primary plan is unable to be carried out due to the bushfire.
