Prepare an emergency kit in the event of a bushfire

WA BAL Report is today discussing preparing an emergency survival kit which will be useful in the event of bushfires. WA BAL Report recommends that if you live in an area that is likely to be affected by bushfires, that you prepare an emergency survival kit, to prepare and protect your household. It is important to inform and work together with your family to prepare an emergency kit for the whole household.

Your emergency kit should contain:

  • First aid kit with manual
  • Waterproof torch and spare batteries
  • Portable battery-operated AM/FM radio
  • Candles and waterproof matches
  • Woollen blankets
  • Medication, toiletries and sanitary supplies, including any special requirements for infants, elderly, the injured or disabled
  • Food (canned or dry)
  • Drinking water (at least 3 litres per person for 3 days)
  • Cooking gear, eating utensils, portable gas stove, BBQ and container for boiling water
  • A filter mask for people suffering from respiratory conditions
  • Pocket knife or multi-tool knife
  • Change of clothes including warm jumper, jackets, hats, closed toed shoes or boots
  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Cash, ATM cards and credit cards
  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Map of the area
  • Important documents, such as passports, wills, marriage and birth certificates, valuables and photos, either in physical form or stored on a USB device, in a waterproof bag

Keep your emergency survival kit in a storage container in a location that is easy to grab and that your whole family knows about. Supplies should be regularly checked and stocked to ensure the provisions are fresh and safe to use.

If you are leaving with pets, you should also ensure they are wearing an identification tag and remember to take a leash, basket, medication, food and a familiar toy for your animal.
